EMBRACE THE END

Ley Lines

Century Media (2008)

by Facemelter

Decided to listen to this cd without reading anything about the band.  Somewhat impressed yet not blown away.  They're kind of like Dillinger Escape Plan meets Black Dahlia Murder and Hatebreed.  There's something here for everyone.  Speed, aggression, technicality and a sense of melody.  Embrace The End has an obvious love of death metal yet they dig into the squelch/pinch harmonics favored by so many pioneers like Sepultura, Meshuggah and Machine Head.  They do it well too.  This is a hardcore band that is not afraid to go technical metal one minute then riff away into brutal death metal the next.

What I DON'T like is they change ideas TOO quick.  You hear a good vibe, then they change riffs seemingly just for the sake of it.  "Cop In A Cage" is a metalcore start to the album, then a jazzy interlude, then a matchcore deconstruction.  It then continues very heavy and aggressive with a trippy outro plus some death metal blast beats.  Track two is very metal.  Doom to thrash to Cleveland style hardcore is all intergrated with a very technical approach.  "Pity And The Road To Bimini" starts acoustically before the guitar lead interplay tailspins into a doomy and suffocating breakdown.  Track eight is stomping hardcore that melds into acrobatic metal and the title track features black metal laced vocals with multi dimensional dynamics.

There is SO much potential here but these guys need to try to stop writing three songs within one.  What I now know is Embrace The End is from Sacramento and this is their sophomore effort.  They've toured with Bleeding Through and this album is out now on Century Media.  I recommend this disc if you like Neurosis, Integrity, Relapse Records in general and late '90's Boston metalcore particularly Diecast.
