FLYLEAF

Flyleaf

A&M/Octone (2007)

By Evil Dickie (written 3/19/08)

FLYFEAF was formed in 2000 in Texas and were originally called PASSERBY.  Their self-titled cd was release last fall on A&M/Octone and I thought this quintet needs a little respect and acknowledgment from this evil one. So here it goes…

In the past the 2 months or so Flyleaf has been in & out my car stereo.  I’m a little late for a review but I feel I have to let you know what I think about it.  File this cd under rock under sub-genre alternative.

“I’m So Sick” - this song was heavy enough for the music vid to make it on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball last year.  Lacey Mosley’s screams/growls made it metal but it is really a rock song.  Not a criticism, just an observation on my part.

My musician type friends who like Tool, Dream Theater, Rush, etc wouldn’t give this cd a chance, but I do.  Flyleaf is not complicated and overly imaginative but I like it.  It rocks enough for rock & alt rock fans but has a catchiness to some of the songs will be liked by the radio friendly fans.

I hear so much music and it all can blend together but Flyleaf doesn’t.  The band is decent but to be honest, there are a lot of bands that sound like this one (rock with an edge of alt rock).  As a bad guitar myself, I have notice some catchy cool riffs.  The main reason I like this cd is Lacey Mosley.  I enjoyed her style/phrasing and I think here vocals are good.  She is no Amy Lee.  But who is.  I wouldn’t admit that Flyleaf is is one of my favorite cds of all-time, but I do like it.  I would say I have listened to it from front to back over 50 times.  I guess this means I like it.   I guess I do.  Thumbs up from this evil one!

Flyleaf highlights for me are “I’m So Sick”, “ Perfect”, “So I Thought”, “Cassie”, “Sorrow” & “There For You”.
