KHANN

Tofutopia

Metal Blade (2007)

By Mark Visco

The first word that came to mind when I started listening to this CD was “brutal”. KHANN has only been around since 2006 and the Florida based band is one of a kind.  Mixing screamo, thrash and death metal with a hint of progressive rock and hardcore punk. Although most of the songs on Tofutopia are extremely short (most under two minutes), each song is still packed with an aggressive punch.

The album starts with an interesting intro before we are hit with KHANN’s fast drumming and deep vocals. The vocals often vary from deep Cannibal Corpse type growling to the screaming that you’d hear in all great metal bands. During all the fast drum beats and finger splitting guitar, they still manage to maintain an obvious rhythm and theme.

KHANN successfully delivers brutal metal but in a beautiful melodic way.  This is expressed in “Anodyynic Spheres”. This song is a rollercoaster.  Starting off smooth and slow and eventually building up to the vocals. “Silver Mouth” and “Volcanic Lungs Part I” are also great examples, practically switching genres during the songs.

Final thought, KHANN is defiantly a band that well be hearing a lot of in the future. They're a different kind of metal, a more diverse and unique kind of metal that shouldn’t be looked over.
