RAW RADAR WAR

Double Equals

Traktor7 (2007)

by Sully Paytonn

Former Only Living Witness front-man Jonah Jenkins wins best lyric of the year on Raw Radar War's Double Equals (Traktor7) when he screams out the warning, "Do not throw grenades upstairs!" on "Lack of Fire Discipline". Quite frankly, Jonah Jenkins' latest project might turn out to be the best punk record of the year. Since Witness, Jenkins has fronted heavy alt-rockers Miltown and ripping stoner metallers Milligram, but Raw Radar War is his return to his tried and true punk roots.

Double Equals is the angriest, scuzziest and heaviest punk record out there, with 15 songs clocking in at a mind boggling and heart-stopping 26 minutes. While that times out to a nearly epic two minutes a song, take out closer "Truckloads of Ammunition" and you're left with 14 songs in just under 18 minutes. If you're looking for the outstanding vocals Jenkins has become synonymous with, look elsewhere, as each song is a vocal chord shredding blast of piss and vinegar with guttural roars thrown in for good measure. Former OHM guitarist Mario Travers brings a vicious downtuned guitar sound that's bolstered by the practically "Brown Sound" inducing bass of Charles Corey. And there are plenty of punk nuggets on here that might cause you to shit yourself. Try the Bad Brains on meth sounds of "Vampire Command" or the dark beastly blast of "Riven Tarmac". Raw Radar War even remind us Napalm Death's Scum-era with the dual threat of "Supreme Truth" and "Shining Path".

In this commercial alternative rock world in which we live, where Sum 41, New Found Glory and AFI are the punk standard bearers, Raw Radar War brings punk back to what it was meant to be. With their middle fingers high in the air and their Marshall stacks tuned up to 11, Double Equals reminds us that punk was meant to be ugly and subversive and nowhere near to being radio friendly.
