STICK TO YOUR GUNS

Comes From The Heart

Century Media (2008)

by Facemelter

The Stick To Your Guns story began at an Ignite show at The House Of Blues in Anaheim, Ca.  The band received such a positive response (from a very brutal crowd), that they were quickly snatched up by the rock biz and sent around the country touring.  If you can hold your own opening up for Terror night after night,...I think you're gonna be alright.

The label is spinning STYG as a melodic hardcore band from Orange County.  Not much of an OC thing goin' down here kids.  I'm not so sure fans of Avenged Sevenfold, Thrice, Eighteen Visions, Atreyu, etc. would buy this.  Like a few songs?  Perhaps.  Download a track or two?  Definitely.  This whole affair reeks of the east Coast.  On several songs, I thought RogerMiret of Agnostic front was fronting God Forbid.  STYG really, are all about huge riffs and pit breakdowns.  They'd be fun to see live but I'm not so sure your average Thrice, The Used or Chiodos fan would be in the pit getting bloody..

COMES FROM THE HEART feels like a really old school hardcore record.  That being said, I give the band props for stretching out a bit on "Enough Is Enough", the longest track (3:57), they sound briefly like a completely different band.  "Look's like the joke's on us", vocalist Jesse Barnett claims.  Jesse doesn't know that although it's ok to put a shot of Jaeger in a glass of Red Bull, it's definitely NOT ok to put your emo melodies in my thug-core chunka chugga.  Actually, all half kidding aside, although it's not smooth, it actually kinda,...alright, fuck it again, it sounds WAY out of place.  "We Must Look Like Ants From Up There" is much speedier hardcore than most of the record until (gasp!) a guitar solo breaks up the festivities.  "Tonight's Entertainment" with it's guitar histrionics and battering ram rhythmic pulse not only moves some serious air but I'm sure it would be a mother fucker live.

If Stick To Your Guns (I'll avoid the obvious pun), experiments and finds their own sound and/or style, they could be a "Driving Force"(trk 9) in the future of metal and hardcore.  Solid outing here with nice crispy production (I like it when you can hear the bass).  Recommended.
