ZIMMERS HOLE

When You Were Shouting at the Devil...

Century Media (2008)

by Mark Visco

Zimmers Hole isn’t your average metal band at all. Their music is straight up head-banging dark metal, topped off with hilarious and offensive lyrics. Their latest album When You Were Shouting at the Devil displays Chris Valago’s (aka The Heathen) range of singing and his unique vocals. Zimmers Hole sounds like a darker and eviler Strapping Young Lad, which isn’t a surprise since both bands share the same guitarist and bassist. Although both bands vocals sound pretty much identical, "The Heathen" is not Devin Townsend.

This album has songs about evil happenings, Satan, beasts, sex, and women, all backed with deep metal tones and beats. They even toss some Halloween sound effects into the mix, as well as sounds of bodily functions and beastly growls. The last two tracks of ‘When you were shouting at the devil…..’ display ‘The Heathens" vocal abilities. Whether he’s wailing like Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden or growling like Lucifer from the ninth layer of hell, his voice can deliver in any genre of metal.

Halfway through the album, "The Vowel Song" opens with a terribly read public service announcement (ironically about the staggering number of Americans that are illiterate) from Nathan Explosion, lead singer of the band Dethklok from Cartoon Networks metal cartoon Metalocalypse. They close the album with a song titled "What’s My Name….Evil!" which ends perfectly with creepy, nightmare-ish and horrendous sounds of some sort of beast or animal dying and gasping for its last breaths; the perfect way to end this album.

All in all, this album is definitely different and something you don’t hear too often. Though it’s mainly comedy, Zimmer’s Hole is still a great metal band that delivers with every CD, and their latest release isn’t an exception.
